Together, the territories conventionally called England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales comprise over 5,500 islands, studding and separating the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. And between them, the languages of this archipelago muster dozens of words for “island”, depending on size, profile, and water-context (fresh or salt; running or still; marine, estuarine or riverine). Listed, these words form a poem of paraphones: skerrie, skellig, sgeir, eyot, eilean, islet, inis, ynys, inch, isle, ailsa, ellan, oilean.”

Announcing the forthcoming publication of ARCHIPELAGO Issue One, available Summer 2007

ARCHIPELAGO is to be a literary magazine in the ordinary sense, in that it will contain writings in non-fictional prose, and verse. Extraordinary will be its preoccupations with landscape, with documentary and remembrance, with wilderness and wet, with natural and cultural histories, with language and languages, with the littoral and vestigial, the geological, and topographical, with climates, in terms of both meteorology, ecology and environment; and all these things as metaphor, liminal and subliminal, at the margins, in the unnameable constellation of islands on the Eastern Atlantic coast, known variously in other millennia as Britain, Great Britain, Britain and Ireland etc; even, too, too readily, the United Kingdom (including the North of partitioned Ireland), though no such thing ever existed, other than in extremis during wartime, but in the letter. But while the unnameable archipelago is its subject, its vision is by implication global, and its concerns with the state of the planet could not be more of the hour.

The first issue features contributions by: Paul Abbott, Norman Ackroyd, John Beatty, Julian Bell, Roger Deakin, Greg Delanty, Seamus Heaney, Mick Imlah, Nicolas Jacobs, Andrew Kahn, Michael Longley, Robert Macfarlane, Derek Mahon, Osip Mandelshtam, Andrew McNeillie, Gail McNeillie, David Nash, Bernard O’Donoghue, Angharad Price and Mark Williams. For notes on contributors click here.

The first issue of ARCHIPELAGO was successfully launched as part of the Passionate Natures conference held at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, 22-24 June 2007.

Archipelago: (k p l g), def. 1 “Any sea or sheet of water, studded with many isles.” We live, though this is easily forgotten, on an island group of exceptional intricacy. Listed, these words form a poem of paraphones: skerrie, skellig, sgeir, eyot, eilean, islet, inis, ynys, inch, isle, ailsa, ellan, oilean.

Easily forgotten, because so many forces now warp us away from direct experience of the land on which we live. Urbanisation, habits of travel, modern farming practices, footloose industries, the internet – more and more people are being prised from a relationship with the physical aspects of this archipelago: its scores of rock types, its capricious weathers, its tides, seasons, birds, plants and creatures, its hundreds of rivers, its thousands of peaks.

Recently, however, there has been a surge of interest in just these elemental qualities to the land. Signs of the surge are visible across the cultural spectrum. They are there in popular forms: the ongoing success of the TV programme Coast, for instance, or the huge viewing figures achieved by Springwatch and Autumnwatch. And there, too, in the shifting image-repertoire of British and Irish tourism. This year, 10 broadsheet features have appeared recommending ways and places to “go wild in the British Isles”. Gone is the cliché of a domestic holiday as a mildewed caravan in a damp field. Instead, a new excitement is emerging at the adventures that are to be had in the moors, forests, high hills, rivers and edgelands of these islands.

Increasing numbers of artists – poets, novelists, non-fiction writers, painters, photographers and sculptors – are also finding inspiration in the patterns and plays of geology, meteorology and natural history. Taking only the example of photography, there is David Parker, who travels the coasts of Britain and Ireland, making massive-format, long-exposure sepia photographs of sea-stacks: the great rocks that wave action has eroded into monolith, spire or arch. His remarkable images record the eeriness of these structures, looming out of coppery seas or soft mists, and often thinner at their bases than their summits – such that they seem top-heavy, impervious to gravity, supernaturally weightless. Then there is Michael Marten, a photographer who has become fascinated by the lost tidal land – amphibious, unowned – that exists between the low-water mark and the high-water mark, and who takes pairs of images from precisely the same position (the positions of the tripod’s feet marked with pebbles and sticks) at high and low tide. There is Harry Cory Wright, who last year made a Defoeian “Journey Through the British Isles”, beginning in Shetland at the spring equinox, and then travelling south, recording the landscapes he encountered on a large-format Gandolfi-plate camera. Other photographers working in a more super-real mode include Joe Cornish, Philip Fenton and Rod Edwards.

It can be hard to know what to call this new body of work. “Landscape art” is blandly tepid. “Nature writing” is sapless and text-specific. “Pastoral” summons swains and greenswards. “Environmental” has become gummed by politics. Perhaps the adjective “archipelagic” might serve, catching as it does at imaginings that are chthonic, marine, elemental and felt.

Last month saw the appearance of a new journal called Archipelago, with which I have been involved. It was conceived of and is edited by the poet Andrew McNeillie, and its original aims were to provide a home for the new archipelagic art, and to inspire and embody a return to the land – and seascapes – of these islands. It is impressively rangy in terms of form (reportage, criticism, poetry, photographs and artwork) and language (English, Welsh, Gaelic, Russian and Anglo-Saxon). Established artists presenting new material include Seamus Heaney, Roger Deakin, Derek Mahon, Michael Longley, Bernard O’Donoghue, the painter Norman Ackroyd, the artist Julian Bell, the sculptor David Nash, and the photographer John Beatty. The issue also carries the work of emerging young writers, among them the Welsh novelist Angharad Price, and the Oxford poet Paul Abbott.

So much nature-minded art suffers from the tonal sins of polemicism, piety or plangency. Too often, one hears the shrill righteousness of the preacher, the hushed tones of the votary, or the elegist’s mournful whinny. But none of these is audible here. Archipelago prefers a tone that is praiseful and attentive, content to acknowledge both the mystery of placehood and the strangeness of material fact. The journal is, too, a beautifully made thing: book-size, heavy in the hand, rough to the touch, and with an arresting woodcut aesthetic of black and white, gouge and stipple. Craft has gone into its making, and craft is celebrated by it.

A tradition of archipelagic writing goes as far back as the Celtic peregrini of the sixth to 10th centuries AD: the monks, solitaries and pilgrims who travelled west to live on the remote littorals of Britain and Ireland, and who left behind them a literature that is devotedly alert to place. The nameless monk, responsible for drystone walling on the island of North Rona in the ninth century, who stopped his work to write a poem recording his delight at standing on a “clear headland”, looking over the “smooth strand”, to the “calm sea”, and hearing the calls of the “wondrous birds”. Or the 10th-century copyist, working in an island monastery, who paused long enough to scribble a note in Gaelic beside his Latin text: “Pleasant to me is the glittering of the sun today upon these margins.” The margins of the island? The margins of the page? The one fades into the other.

In the centuries since the peregrini, the archipelagic imagination has gone through many ebbs and surges. At present it is, unmistakably, surging. We do not have to look far to explain this. Menace and anxiety have always stimulated cultural production, and loss has always stimulated desire. Currently, global warming and en-vironmental damage are threatening these islands – and the world – with change more swift and serious than anything since the Pleistocene. As McNeillie’s editorial concludes, while the unnameable archipelago is the journal’s subject, “its vision is by implication global, and its concerns with the state of the planet could not be more of the hour.”

Reviews of The Integral Vision

“Philosopher, psychologist, and mystic Wilber delivers on the subtitle’s far-reaching promise. . . . Chock full of handsome illustrations and spare, Zen-like diagrams and tables, Wilber’s work here is still accessible and at times surprisingly practical. Some language spirals up majestically, recalling great Eastern texts. Reminiscent in spirit and watershed import of Ram Dass’s Be Here Now, Wilber may well have created a popular classic for explorers on the frontiers of humanity.”—Publishers Weekly

Description of The Integral Vision

At last, an accessible book for anyone who wants an easy introduction to Ken Wilber’s thought and its practical applications, both personal and global. The key components of his Integral Approach—a tool for “making sense of everything”—are distilled here into a simple and elegant full-color presentation.

What is the Integral Approach? Suppose we took everything that all the various cultures have to tell us about human potential—about psychological, spiritual, and social growth—and tried to identify the critically essential patterns that connect these pieces of knowledge. What if we attempted, based on this extensive cross-cultural study, to create an all-inclusive map that includes the best elements from all of the world’s great traditions?

The Integral Approach provides just such a map. Using all the known systems and models of human growth—from the ancient shamans and sages to the latest breakthroughs in cognitive science—it distills their major components into five simple factors that readers can verify in their own consciousness right now.

In any field of interest—such as business, law, science, psychology, health, or everyday living and learning—the Integral Approach ensures that we are utilizing the full range of resources for the situation, leading to a greater likelihood of success. By providing easily understood explanations, exercises, and familiar examples, The Integral Vision shows how we can accelerate personal growth and development to higher, wider, deeper ways of being, and achieve greater excellence in private and professional life.
For us, a Buddhist Geek is someone who is intimately involved with Buddhist theory and practice, and who has a certain connection to the Buddhist tradition.Stepping back for a moment, we’re also hoping to stimulate and be stimulated by the emerging Buddhoblogosphere, and in the spirit of Freedom of which the Buddha so clearly taught, our greatest desire is that this material be of direct benefit to the continued awakening of all seekers of the way.”

About the BuddhistGeeks

Ryan OelkeRyan Oelke is a MA student at Naropa University studying Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, Tibetan and Sanskrit Languages . This program sequence is based on formal Tibetan monastic college training and study, focusing on Abhidharma, Buddhist epistemology, philosophical systems, Madhyamaka, buddhanature, and the study of major Indian texts and Tibetan commentaries, in addition to contemplative meditation. In his Tibetan classes he has translated sections of the Jewel Ornament of Liberation by Gampopa and portions of a text on the twelve links of interdependent origination. After completion of his graduate degree he hopes to pursue a PhD in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, with particular emphasis on translation. In addition to his studies at Naropa Ryan has completed a graduate MSEd degree in Counseling Pyschology at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. In undergrad he studied percussion performance, sound engineering, and Spanish.

Ryan practices following the Dzogchen and Buddhist teachings of Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche and recently completed a solitary retreat at Tsegyalgar focusing on the teachings and practices of the Santi Maha Sangha training.

Gwen BellGwen Bell is a certified yoga instructor, award-winning author and Zen practitioner. She began studying Buddhism in her freshman year of college and stayed on the path, taking courses on the subject while at school, until it led her to Japan. She lived in Japan for three years and opened her yoga studio, Yoga Garden with partner Patrick (Zen teacher). She took her Mindfulness Training vows with Thich Nhat Hanh in 2000. At that time she became vegetarian and was given the name “Lovely Teacher of the Heart.”

She merges her understanding of the often stoic Soto Zen tradition with the open-hearted (compassionate) approach of Pure Land.

In Japan she studied with Brad Warner, author of Hardcore Zen and Sit Down & Shut Up. She likes his no bull-shit approach to the practice and takes Zen seriously while maintaining a healthy attitude of playfulness towards herself.

She’s a designer, a photographer, an interviewer and a world traveler. She’s continually exploring the boundaries between herself and others, between her own mind and body, untangling the knot that is Self.

She considers herself the worst horse when it comes to seated meditation practice. She also knows that the worst horse is sometimes the best, and is developing compassion for herself and others through tonglen.

Just because she wears contacts sometimes, don’t be fooled. This girl is one hardcore geek.

Vince HornVince Horn is a graduate of Naropa University’s Religious Studies program, where his studies centered around comparative mysticism and the Buddhist tradition. Vince is also a committed vipassana practitioner, especially as it is taught in the Insight Meditation tradition.

In terms of teachers, Vince has been deeply affected by the unorthodox perspectives of Kenneth Folk and Daniel Ingram. He has also benefited from several of the teachers in the insight meditation tradition, including Jack Kornfield, John Travis, Guy Armstrong, and Howie Cohn (to name a few).

His current obsessions interests include living a yogic lifestyle in the modern world, studying and using meditative cartographies, the intersection between contemplative awareness and business, integral theories of spirituality, the role of technology in spiritual development, and helping Buddhism transition to the West while maintaining its essential strengths.

He talks of a language that is not made of concepts, a language that helps you to remove concepts.

He goes on to say that that from time to time he uses such language himself, and he relates that famous example of when he was in Philadelphia in 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War, the only Buddhist monk at an anti-war demo. A reporter asked him if he was the North or South of Vietnam, so if he says the North, he is anti-American, if he says the South he is with the Liberation Front aligned with the North, or he is betraying the cause of anti-communism. These were the two boxes he was given to ‘check’ as he puts it, tick.

Bulls eye! I hear a gentle hint of humour in his voice as he says this, but this may just be my search image. Sweet as. He then unpacks that statement a little saying how he wonders if the reporter is intelligent he will ponder this and will he enquire about the way of reconciliation, transcending the conflict, considering both parties as one?

“Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darueber muss man schweigen” Whereof we cannot speak, we must pass over in silence…

Thich Nhat Hanh, discusses a couple of time when the Buddha observes noble silence, ‘deep silence’ as he puts it. A learned philosopher comes and asks many, many questions. (This guy reminds me of the American professor In Zen Flesh, Zen Bones. Reps and Nyogen Senzaki, who are the transcribers, begin with that famous tale of Zen master Nan-in overflowing a visiting professor’s tea cup to illustrate how filled the professor is with himself, so filled he cannot learn anything new.) He asks about the doctrine of no- self and this and that. After he finally leaves, frustrated, Ananada opines that the Buddha had taught them the doctrine of no-self and why had he not confirmed this. The Buddha said he did his best to protect the philosopher from wrong views.

Another time an ascetic comes before the Buddha and asks about ultimate reality, again the Buddha observes deep noble silence. Silence, dog barking in the distant village, a slight breeze ruffles the leaves of the trees, the moon rises and sets. After a very long time the ascetic finally satisfied does dundapranam, lying out completely before the Buddha, three times… and makes an offering of fruit for the teachings. After his departure Ananda is astounded and says, he respects you alot. The Buddha replied with a twinkle in his eye ” Ananda with a good horse you do not need a whip.”

Cypress Trees by Jean Miele

A Little Story About A Cypress Tree
He concludes with a little zen story about a Cypress Tree, a well known story in Zen circles.

One day a student of Zen came to his teacher.

“Teacher I have been here three years but you have not told me about the true meaning of Bodhidharmas coming to the West, about ultimate reality.”

Ultimate reality? Well difficult to tell the monk, how could I show the monk ultimate reality, the essence of Bodhidharma going to the West. So the teacher looked to the front yard, points his finger:

“Monk do you see the Cypress in the front yard?”

The monk looked at the Cypress, nothing particular, nothing special. And that is all the teacher said that morning, he refused to say another word.

To me, Thich Nhat Hanh explains, it is very important to notice the presence of the Cypress in the front yard, the monk had been living three years in the monastery. He might have passed the Cypress maybe a thousand times, but has he really had the chance to stop, and touch and be aware that the cypress is there?

If he does not practise Mindfullness in the presence of the Cypress and everything that is in the present moment, how could he touch the ultimate reality?

Can you touch the ultimate reality without touching the Cypress?

Mindfulness in your daily life is a dharma door and if you don’t have the door, how can you open to ultimate reality? Experiencing the the Cypress tree, eating your breakfast mindfully, washing the dishes is the ‘kung fu’ of the everyday. Kung fu, he says, means daily practice not martial art!

So he picks up the story of the Cypress tree once more:

Then the story of the Cypress tree became very well known. And people thought that there is a very deep, deep meaning in it; and that you had to make it into a subject of contemplation ~ a koan.

And there is another monk who lived thousands of kilometeres from the temple, and he heard about the fame of the Cypress tree. So he wanted to come to the teacher in order to enquire about the Cypress. Unfortunately when he arrived the teacher has passed away, and he cried.
No more chance to to enquire about that wonderful, deep theme of meditation.

The teacher is no longer there, but his senior disciple is still there. Why don’t you go to him and enquire about the Cypress? So the monk went through so many formalities in order to obtain an interview with the senior monk.

And after listening to the visiting monk, the senior monk asked:

“WHAT CYPRESS???”
   “I don’t know about it!”

So our visiting monk could not believe it!:

“The whole country has heard about the Cypress. It has become a sacred topic of talk in Zen circles. It is a very important, very deep subject of meditation, how could you say that!?”

“Are you really the senior disciple of the master?”

And the Abbott said:

“I am! My master never said anything about the Cypress you had better not slander him.”

When I listen to that, Thich Nhat Hanh relates, I saw the very intention of the senior disciple, to kill the Cypress. For the sake of, the goodness of the people. Because many people got caught into it. If you are actually in the situation you can understand it, but once it is related as a story, it becomes a myth. The senior disciple did not want people to get caught in it.

His intention is to kill the cypress in order to open another path.
So killing the Cypress is a new koan. And if the visiting monk is intelligent he can get enlightened by this new anti-cypress.

‘Cypress is a dharma door, but anti-cypress is another one very fresh’, he says.

That is something about the language of Zen, when you are trained you get used to that kind of talking.

So there are two dimensions to Right View, to insight.

The first dimension, the historical dimension, you can talk about right view; impermanence, non-self, emptiness and the 4 Noble Truths and the 8 fold noble path.

But the ultimate dimension, nothing can be said about of it.
And this you find in the Heart Sutra .

Form is emptiness, emptiness is form.
The teaching is a raft to the other shore, do not get caught by the raft.
